Hans Halvorson, Princeton University- "The invariant structure of equivalent theories"

Thursday, April 23, 2015, 04:30pm - 06:30pm

“The Invariant Structure of Equivalent Theories" Abstract: In discussing the foundations of physics, philosophers have made numerous claims about which theories are equivalent, and which are inequivalent.  Even when they don't explicitly make such claims, they rely on some implicit principles of equivalence.  I look at two explications of the notion of theoretical equivalence, one given by Clark Glymour in 1970, and a more recent notion ("Morita equivalence") suggested by developments in category theory. I then explain how these criteria bear on recent discussions in philosophy of physics and in metaphysics.
