Title:
"The deaf, who deserve only friends, have enemies": Deaf Philosophy in the 21st Century
Abstract:
Why have there been so few deaf philosophers, and in particular, why so few signing deaf philosophers in the academy? There are many possible answers to this question, but one plausible response is that the culturally Hearing academy has not been welcoming of deaf philosophers. Another plausible response is the charge that Deaf academia has not sufficiently attended to philosophical education. My own response lies somewhere in between. The first part of this paper will focus on identifying the infrastructure problems for deaf philosophers and deaf philosophy. Following this, I will sketch out some potential responses and solutions to improving the climate for deaf philosophers, including the creation of an ASL lexicon of philosophical terms.
