Rutgers Philosophy Fall 2020 Colloquium

Modest Modeling

Prof. Daniel Greco (Yale University)

Abstract

Idealization and model-building are ubiquitous in epistemology. But while the practice of model-building in epistemology is old, metaepistemological reflection on its significance is not. In a manuscript in progress--Idealization in Epistemology: A Modest Modeling Approach, I argue that the fact that epistemologists build models isn't merely an interesting observation that can leave first-order epistemological debates untouched. Rather, once we view epistemology through the lens of idealization and model-building, the landscape looks quite different.

Thursday, November 12th, 3 – 5 pm Eastern Time
